The lyrics are sung over a stretched out E chord played on the 7th fret
on the A string. Stretch the E chord by one fret until your
index finger reaches the 4th fret on the A string, then go back
to the E chord on the 7th fret. The numbers after the E
represent the fret number that's stretched from the original E position.
If you're familiar with the song, then the strumming patterns will come to you naturally!

Just clarifying, I believe all the A's and E's are minor. And the first progression is the 6th, 3rd, 2nd, and 1st strings open, the 5th fret on the 4th string, and then a the 7th fret of the 5th string, then 6th, 5th, and 4th.
Em, Em/Eb, Em/D, Em/Db

I played it the way it is described here. Super easy! play an E chord on the 7th fret of the A string with the open E droning. Play a punk rock power chord and simply slide the index finger up one fret at a time with the pinkie finger anchoring the chord shape. Use the pinky finger to allow for the extreme stretch. Lots of fun! You do have to play the regular chords for the "future was wide open" and the signature chords. This arrangement allows the song to sound a little more "rock."

The chords names are Eminor, EmMaj7, Em7 and Em6. It is also are line of chromatic notes going down from E minor. Great to play within an Eminor chord with ringing three topstringm making an Eminor chord in itself,,,thx to Tom and Jeff !
