For clarification, at the "I'm scared and
that's the best that I can say" line, I think he plays a note on the 3rd fret
on low E string over the Em softly (G/Em)
. You can sort of hover on this chord and
play a few bass notes until the next
mesure starts the verse.
Also, any notes I put in brackets down there aren't part of the lyrics. Enjoy!
G/C Am
It's 6AM, I'm shivering beneath the bed sheets
Dm
The pillowcase fell off last night when I
Fmaj7
held it in my arms.
G/C
I read Am
Short stories, while you twitched in your sleep beside me,
Dm
your Fmaj7
Breath it fell so heavy, as I sat there in the dark
Dm Fmaj7
And oh you whispered quiet, making friends beneath the
G/C
Scenery of a sun cracked open sky beneath
Em
the dark lids Dm
Of your eyes. You were skipping stones and I was still alone
Fmaj7
When I turned off the light, scribbling
G/C
onto sticky notes
G/Em
I am scared and that's the best that I can say
G/C Am
I work a job to pay the debt I owe my family,
Dm
to pay back for
Fmaj7 G/C
That one time I pushed your chin. All this hope I hold
Am
just buries Dm
Its evil in me out of sight, but it slips through a hole
Fmaj7
In my side I've seen another of me and you
G/C Am
So we'll climb in that Buick down 222, and I'll
Dm
Close my eyes, the sun goes down each time
Fmaj7
I see the light
G/C
I swear it's true. Because I've loved
down with this crown watching
Am Dm
Old dogs age without whimpering, and I find it hard to say that
Fmaj7
I am strong
G/C Am
But I'll be sure with each passing breath to read you
Dm
Stories that are glimmering with the light that reflected
(let ring) Fmaj7
Off these marigolds that caught my neck when I hit
The ground
Dm Fmaj7
And oh you whispered quiet, making friends beneath the
G/C
Scenery of a sun cracked open sky beneath
Em
the dark lids
Of your eyes.
Dm
You were skipping stones and I was still alone
Fmaj7
When I turned off the light, scribbling
G/C
onto sticky notes
G/Em
I am scared and that's the best that I can say
(start quietly, then pick up towords the 3rd or 4th repetition
G/C Am
All we are is all we are and still I will become,
Em
all I am and all
Fmaj7
I thought I can't recall because (X6)
Dm Fmaj7
And oh you whispered quiet, making friends beneath the
G/C
Scenery of a sun cracked open sky beneath
Em
the dark lids
Of your eyes.
Dm
You were skipping stones and I was still alone
Fmaj7
When I turned off the light, scribbling
G/C
onto sticky notes
G/Em
I am scared and that's the best that I can say
G/C Am
I'm still tugging on your hand, like when I was innocent
Em
We used to only lie when we needed sleep
(End on Fmaj7)

If anyone is curious what little flourish sometimes shows up on the G/C Chord, I think I figured it out. Just play the first strum of the chord with your second finger off the string and hammer it on during the off beat.
