"If It Don't Bleed"
by James McMurtry
tabbed by: Jim Ferraiolo (jmfguitartabs@gmail.com)
Cadd9 x32033
D5 xx0235
Em7 022033
At times, only a single bass note is played between chord changes. There's places in the song where the
chords transition quickly (ie the Em7 D Cadd9 found in the second half of most verses) -- here you can play
the chord or just the bass note D, either will work.
The chords found in the intro are a little more "crunchy" and seem to be played without thirds. Cadd9
becomes
x3x033, G becomes 3x0033, D becomes xx023x if you choose to play them this way.
[Intro]
Cadd9 G D
Cadd9 G D
[Verse 1]
Cadd9 G
Looking back down the road from a little ways out
D Em7
I never had a fear and I never had a doubt
Cadd9 G D
If it had a lick of sense I'd have figured that out pretty fast
Cadd9 G
But I wadn't any smarter than the average kid
D Em7
Somebody mighta noticed, but I never did
Cadd9 G D
I never saw the future fading right into the past
Cadd9 D
Talking to the wallpaper, wandering the halls
Em7 D Cadd9
I burned a lot of bridges and I dropped a lot of balls
Cadd9 G D
It's a wonder I can ever go back to any place I've been
Cadd9 D
But I wouldn't get down on my knees on a bet
Em7 D Cadd9
I'm near enough to Jesus as I'd ever want to get
Cadd9 G D
Seeking salvation ain't part of my general plan
[Chorus]
Cadd9 G
Save your prayers for yourself
D Em7
Raise my glass to your health
Cadd9 G D
I don't mind if you don't look like me
Cadd9 G
I can share my bread and wine
D Em7
I come from another time
Cadd9 G D
It don't matter all that much if it don't bleed
Cadd9
If it don't bleed
[Fill 1]
Cadd9 G D
[Verse 2]
Cadd9 G
Now it's all I can do to just get out of bed
D Em7 D
There's more in the mirror than there is up ahead
Cadd9 G D
I smile and I nod like I heard what you said every time
Cadd9 D5
So run another rack, pour another shot
Em7 D Cadd9
You don't get it back so give it all you got
Cadd9 G D
While you still got a more or less functional body and mind
[Chorus]
Cadd9 G
Save your prayers for yourself
D Em7
Raise my glass to your health
Cadd9 G D
I don't mind if you don't look like me
Cadd9 G
I can share my bread and wine
D Em7
I come from another time
Cadd9 G D
It don't matter all that much if it don't bleed
Cadd9
If it don't bleed
[Solo]
Cadd9 G D
Cadd9 G Em7 D
Cadd9 G D Em7
Cadd9 G D
[Verse 3]
Cadd9 G
I learned to answer my calls and open my mail
D Em7 D
I paid my taxes and I stayed out of jail
Cadd9 G
You stay in the game when you're too broke to fail
D
That's a fact
Cadd9 D
Talking to the wallpaper sleeping in the hall
Em7 D Cadd9
Your bones get brittle so you better not fall
Cadd9
You slow to a crawl
G D
Time gets to balling the jack
D
Run you right off the track
[Chorus]
Cadd9 G
Save your prayers for yourself
D Em7
Raise my glass to your health
Cadd9 G D
I don't mind if it don't talk like me

I can share my bread and wine

I come from another time

It don't matter all that much if it don't bleed
