[Verse]
         Am C
When the Pope kissed the ground
           F C
The sniper fired an angry round
        D7/F# F
Well it missed him by a whisker
        G7sus4 C
And the gunman could not be found

             Am C
They found a bullet in the chapel nearby
           F C
It was embedded in the altar stone
         D7/F# F
The statue Virgin upon the altar
          G7sus4 C
Started bleeding on a Sunday

         Am C
And so the faithful- They came in thousands
           F C
From as far as the Phillipines
        D7/F# F
To pray for healing from the Virgin
        G7sus4 C
And to kiss that bullet clean

             Am C
Word got around about the Virgin
           F C
There were pilgrims- There were tourists
      D7/F# F
Souvenirs and postcards
          G7sus4 C
Plastic virgins and bullet roseries

         Am C
And many cripples started walking
           F C
And the mute began to speak
        D7/F# F
And the skeptics kept on talking
        G7sus4 C
It went on like this for weeks

[Chorus]
             Am C
Sing Hallelujah song
     F C
Hallelujah song
       D7/F# F

[Verse]
           Am C
Soon they found the statue shattered
            F C
A bloodied rifle among the pieces
          D7/F# F
Found the sniper above the altar
         G7sus4 C
Dead and tangled in the attic

         Am C
As they rifled through his jacket
            F C
A bloodied wallet identified him
          D7/F# F
And his surname was Emmanuel
    G7sus4 C
His given name was Jesus

         Am C
So they buried him in the Chapel
          F C
With the rifle by his side
          D7/F# F
And they bought another statue Virgin
         G7sus4 C
With the proceeds from the healing

         Am C
Now she stands upon the altar
              F C
Spring water runs from the bullet hole
          D7/F# F
Now the Chapel is a shrine
             G7sus4 C
They use the water to make wine

             Am C
Now when the Pope kisses ground
              F C
Bullet-proof glass all around
               D7/F# F
And that’s the story of the Virgin
       G7sus4 C
Sniper Jesus and the faithful

             Am C
That’s the story of the Virgin
         F C
Sniper Jesus and the faithful
           D7/F# F
That’s the story of the Virgin

My all time favorite Dave Bobbyn song. Very Cohen/Dylan-esq. In place of a straight "D", I suggest using a D7/F#, and playing a G7sus4 in place of the last "F" in the chord cycle. It helps impart a little more "gospel" feel, mirroring the original a little more closely. There are more verses, but the chord cycle stays the same throughout. I think the song is outstanding in so many ways - a little known gem that should have a place among those by Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan.
