This Too Shall Pass by Danny Schmidt
Danny Capos this on 2nd or 3rd fret depending on which concert you look at. In his book he says 2nd fret
looking at videos on youtube I see him capo it on the third fret.
This version takes into accout his style of fingerpicking - which relys on the close
proximity of Am, C, G, Ddim7 and F to each other.
It's a rolling fingerpicking style with a ton of hammer-ons - but it's quite easy to get the hang of. Each
note is plucked and then hammered on soon therafter. I recommend finding a video of him playing it so you can
see his fingers. Once you have the style its the same for each stanza and it repeats.
BTW - this is maybe his most popular song. It's about a time when he had health issues and a friend made
him a ring which helped him get perspective and inspired the story. There is a poster for it on his website
as well that has a great design I just got in the mail.
[Intro]
Am - C - G Am - G ...
[Verse 1]
Am
Well things change fast, But this too shall pass
G Ddim7
Better carve it on your forehead or tattoo it on your ass
Am F C
Cause who can tell, when the clock strikes twelve
G
If today's become tomorrow or it's all just gone to hell
[Verse 2]
Am
My friend makes rings, she swirls and sings
G Ddim7
She's a mystic in the sense, that she's still mystified by things
Am F C
But scared to ask, How can nothing seem to last?
G
Cause like a cancer in your body, it all just goes too fast
[Verse 3]
Am
We think too big, we think our self is one whole thing
G Ddim7
And we claim that this collection has a name and is a being
Am F C
But deep inside, when every cell divides
G
Well it sets upon the rule that states self-interest is divine
[Verse 4]
Am
And cancer too lives by this golden rule
G Ddim7
That you must do unto the others as the others unto you
Am F C
All for the best, cause it's all that life accepts
G
So we kill it like a buffalo with awe and with respect
[Verse 5]
Am
Don't ask God, just holler at the sky
G Ddim7
Cause she'll tell it to you plainly in the clouds that whisper by
Am F C
And praise the shapes, and praise the way they change
G
and they'll teach you not to pray to light without you pray to rain
[Verse 6]
Am
So I pray to hands, and I pray to needs
G Ddim7
And I pray to blades of grass to find forgiveness in the weeds
Am F C
But as for health, I just never did believe
G
So I never prayed myself except to those that prayed for me
[Verse 7]
Am
The story goes, or the way that I was told
G Ddim7
There was a king that always felt too high and then he fell too low
Am F C
So he called all the wise men to the hall
G
And he begged them for a gift to end the rises and the falls
[Verse 8]
Am
And here's the thing, they came back with a ring
G Ddim7
It was simple and was plainly unbefitting of a king
Am F C
Engraved in black, well it had no front or back
G
But there were words around the band That said,
"Just know: This Too Shall Pass."
