INTRO : G
( guitar 1 )
G C D G
Well I woke in mid-afternoon cause that's when it all hurts the most
G C D G
I dream I never know anyone at the party and I'm always the host
Bm C G
If dreams are like movies, then memories are films about ghosts
D C G
You can never escape, you can only move south down the coast
G C D G (fill 1)
well, I am an idiot walking a tightrope of fortune and fame
G C D G (fill 2)
I am an acrobat swinging trapezes through circles of flame
Bm C G (fill 3)
If you've never stared off in the distance, then your life is a shame
D
and though I'll never forget your face,
C G (fill 4)
sometimes i can't remember my name
Bm C G D
Hey Mrs. Potter don't cry
Hey Mrs. Potter I know why but
Bm C G D C C/B G
Hey Mrs. Potter won't you talk to me
(fill 5)
G C D G
Well, there's a piece of Maria in every song that I sing
G C D G
And the price of a memory is the memory of the sorrow it brings
Bm C G
And there is always one last light to turn out and one last bell to
ring
D C G
And the last one out of the circus has to lock up everything
G C D G (fill 6)
Or the elephants will get out and forget to remember what you said
G C D G (fill 2)
And the ghosts of the childer world will linger inside your head
Bm C G
And the ferris wheel junkies will spin there forever instead
D C G (fill 1 )
When I see you a blanket of stars covers me in my bed
Bm C G D
Hey Mrs. Potter don't go
Hey Mrs. Potter I don't know but
Bm C G D C C/B G
Hey Mrs. Potter won't you talk to me
(fill 7 )
G C D G
All the blue light reflections that color my mind when I sleep
G C D G
And the lovesick rejections that accompany the company I keep
Bm C G (fill 8)
All the razor perceptions that cut just a little too deep
D C G (fill 9 )
Hey I can bleed as well as anyone, but I need someone to help me sleep
G C D G (fill 10)
So I throw my hand into the air and it swims in the beams
G C D G (fill 11)
It's just a brief interruption of the swirling dust sparkle jet stream
Bm C G
Well, I know I don't know you and you're probably not what you seem
D
But I'd sure like to find out
C G
So why don't you climb down off that movie screen
Bm C G D
Hey Mrs. Potter don't turn
Hey Mrs. Potter I burn for you
Bm C G D C C/B G
Hey Mrs. Potter won't you talk to me
G C D G
When the last king of Hollywood shatters his glass on the floor
G D/F#
and orders another
Em D Bm
Well, I wonder what he did that for
Bm C G
That's when I know that I have to get out cause I have been there
before
D C G (fill 12)
So I gave up my seat at the bar and I head for the door
G C D G (fill 13)
We drove out to the desert just to lie down beneath this bowl of stars
G C D G (fill 14)
We stand up in the palace like it's the last of the great pioneer town
bars
Bm C G
We shout out these songs against the clang of electric guitars
D C G
You can see a million miles tonight But you can't get very far
D C G (fill 14)
Oh, you can see a million miles tonight But you can't get very far
Bm C G D
Hey Mrs. Potter I won't touch
Hey Mrs. Potter it's not much but
Bm C G D C C/B G
Hey Mrs. Potter won't you talk to me

This is great! But where it says "childer world" it should say "tilt-a-whirl"

This is a great tab. I couldn't play this song at all a couple years ago, but came back to it now that I'm a little better.
The only thing I found with this tab is that you have to know this song pretty well before attempting it. The chord switches are not in the right places, but they are nice chord choices, and once you get the rhythm down it is pretty much the same thing(s) over and over. I also like the little.
Also, if you are like me, you've grown use to playing G's using your middle and index fingers for reaching to the upper strings (6th-string G and 5th-B, respectively), whereas I normally see finger-pickers and more traditional guitarist playing it with the big stretch of the ring finger to the 6th-G note. To play the little intro and G progression played at the end of each verse measure, you have to put your pink on the little e and stretch your ring finger to the big E. Then you can use your index to hammer on the 2nd-string C and middle to hit the 3rd-string A. It took me some getting use to, but I finally had a song that forced me to switch my G and I appreciate the practice. This song is as good as it gets for practicing, it is long and repetitive. The key is playing clean and consistent = practice, practice, practice.

Great tab. I've had this tab saved for about ten years and always love referring back to it. The "fill's" refer to the lead though, and that always confused me that the fill was when and only when I was supposed to play the G chord the way it's presented at the beginning of the tab, but that's my not listening to the song and realizing it's always, with slight exception, played that way. Anyway not a comment on you but more on me. Thanks for the great tab!!
