Yeah a D7/F# sounds good there, the bass fits in the chord.
Also, for the intro, I believe they add an F# into the
second chord (Am). I just play a Am6, or:

Instead of the D7, try this... I dont know the name of the chord, but this is how I play it. Its some variation of a D chord with an F# in the bass. It sounds better to my ear when the high E is muted.

yeah that's just a D7/F#, same notes and everything, but you're right, the bass run probably sounds better (although I haven't actually played this song in years :p)
