Live they play the riff on a 12 string- playing the lower notes in the tab. On their original recording they did not have a 12 string and according to Frank allen they used a six string and the recording engineers enhanced it to sound a bit like a 12 string. And yes I too have found Nspen1 to be really helpful.

The D at "i can hear the guitars playing" should b a B minor. There's a video of Jackie DeShannon playing the song on an acoustic guitar (she plays it in D) and there she goes to an E minor. In A that's B minor. Don't know if The Searchers are playing a D but if so, they've got it wrong. The video is from a Jools Holland show if y'all wanna look it up.
