[Verse 1]
       G D G
It was all that I could do to keep from cryin'
    G D G G7
Sometimes it seems so useless to remain
C G
You're the one who always tried to change me
    G D G G7
And that is why I'll always stay the same

[Chorus]
         C G
And I'll hang around as long as you will let me
  C G D
I never minded standin' in the rain
G C G
You don't have to call me "Darlin'," Darlin'
        G D G
But you never even call me by name

[Verse 2]
G D G
You don't have to call me Waylon Jennings
   G D G
No you don't have to call me Charlie Pride
    C G
And you don't have to call me Merle Haggard anymore
     G D G
Even though you know you're on my fightin' side

[Chorus]
         C G
And I'll hang around as long as you will let me
  C G D
I never minded standin' in the rain
G C G
You don't have to call me "Darlin'," Darlin'
        G D G
But you never even call me by name

C'mon now...

[Verse 3]
     G D G
I've seen my name a few times in the phonebook (hello, hello, hello)
           G D G G7
And on the neon sign above the bar I used to own
         C G
There is only one thing that I'm really sure of
             G D G
I'm going to hear it when my Savior calls me home

'Til that day I'll hang around as long as you will let me
  C G D
I never minded standin' in the rain
G C G
You don't have to call me "Darlin'," Darlin'

But you never even call me by name

[Outro]
C
It's not her heart lord, it's her mind
           G
She didn't mean to be unkind
        G D C G
And you never even call me by my na--ame

Bye, baby

NOTES:

The recording of this is pitch-adjusted so it's somewhere in between F# and G. If you want to play with
the album you'll have to figure out the tuning. The intro tab here is approximate and a variation on what
Goodman plays. It's not note-for-note accurate, but it's not too far off and in the spirit of what he plays.

Great job. Thanks. Steve Goodman does not get enough credit for writing most of this song. FWIW Transcribe says it's 0.28 cents below concert G. ;-)

This was meant to be a “ spoof”…country song…..which is why initially John Prine didn’t take credit…..thanks for the tab.

Steve Goodman wrote this song with John Prine (who declined to be officially credited) This is Steve's 1971 studio recording that has a different chord pattern and lyrics than the version popularized by David Allan Coe.
