I find it is easier playing with capo on 4, and then using G C Em and D-[D7/F#] as the chords.
It sounds a bit more like the way Steve may play it too, as you can hear how he plays with the G bass note anchored,
and plays it and the D string in that double pump thumb picking ie like travis style picking...
