In a youtube video of a Soundgardens rig rundown it was stated that for this tuning he uses a set of 9-46 strings and his 3rd string is replaced by another b string (maybe even with the same 16 tension from a higher gauge set?) which is tuned lower, thus it is not uptuned. In the same video the tuning for this particular song was stated as EEBBBE: https://youtu.be/uEl7u9Z3lK0?t=8m44s Having a designated guitar for each tuning must be one of the perks of being Kim Thayil :D

Kim Thayill has used this tuning before in songs like "The Day I Tried to Live". I'm definitely not a fan of trying to tune my guitar to this...
