C C/B Am Am/G
The people in this city call me country,
F G C
Because of how I walk and talk and smile.
C C/B Am Am/G
Well I don't mind them laughing in the city,
F G C
But the country folks all say I'm citified.
C C/B Am Am/G
The fighting men they say that I'm a coward.
F G C
Because I never push no one around.
C C/B Am Am/G
Gentle people call me trouble-maker,
F G C
Cause I'll always fight and stand my ground.
F Em
Funny I don't fit.
Dm Em F G C
Where have all the average people gone?

C C/B Am G F G C

C C/B Am Am/G
Some pious people point and call me sinner,
F G C
Because to them I've never seen the light.
C C/B Am Am/G
Other folks think of me as a preacher.
F G C
I'm just doing what I think is right.
C C/B Am Am/G
The wealthy people think that I am a hobo,
F G C
Lean and hungry, writing mournful songs.
C C/B Am Am/G
And the poor, poor people think I am a rich man,
F G C
But really, I'm just trying to get along.
F Em
It's funny I don't fit.
        Dm Em F G C
Tell me where have all the average people gone?

C C/B Am G F G C

C C/B Am Am/G
And the government has given me a number,
F G C
To simplify my birth and life and death.
C C/B Am Am/G
And still my woman thinks I'm awful important,
F G C
Like the moon the stars the sea the sky and breath.
F Em
Funny I don't fit.
Dm Em F G C
Where have all the average people gone?

Yes, it's funny I don't fit.

Where have all the average people gone?

Just 2 things: At the end of the first line (and those that have the same chords) it should be Am Am/G Then during the chorus part "where have all the average people gone" the chords go Dm Em F G C; just working your way through them 1 beat at a time.

I've never heard the Avett Brothers version, but the Roger Miller original has different verses. VERSE CHORDS (actual) 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & D - D/C# - Em/B - Em/B - 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & A - A - D - D - I suppose since the Em root can be E or B (this is country) but on the recording the bassist tends to emphasize the B, which could mislead to the more rock & roll/Dylanesque progression above. Capo 2nd Fret C - C/B - Dm - Dm G - G - C - C - Much fore straightforward, and closer to Roger's version. Chorus above works, but can get fancier with a few ascending tonic chords. Don't forget the whole-step key change to E at the end!
