I have been singing this song for many many years. It was one of the first songs to play on guitar, but never have I heard nor seen the last verse. It took my breath away. Today I sing this for a Veterans Day program. I'll let you know how it turns out.

On the last line, instead of G C G, try D C G, it sounds better to me.

Definitely, PPM plays a D at the beginning of the last line. The 5th verse is not from PPM. The song is a traditional ballad, so any number of other verses might exist, but never sung by PPM.
