That's not actually quiiite how I do it. I add a bit more to vary the sound on it, but it uses that pattern as a base.
First thing that's different is that I start with a pickup of a 0 - before anything (it's just the last two notes of the phrase before). The other rhythmic change is to finish the phrase with a different section: In other words, I do one of the things that jei.c.evans wrote (well, and the pickup...) and then on the second time through it I vary the pattern to 0 - - 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 -
So, rhythmically, I alternate patterns between 0 - - 0 0 0 0 - 0 - - 0 0 0 0 - and 0 - - 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 -.
On the non-rhythmic side I do a fair amount of muting and playing only bass strings on chords. I'll rewrite the pattern with b for playing just the bass notes and m for when I'm muting my strum

As a further note, the pickup (just like the ends of the phrases) are played on just the bass strings
