Anam Cara was created for the Silent Hill 2 Remake and released on PS5 and PC. It is track no 32 on disc
2 of the accompanying 3 part Silent Hill 2 Original Soundtrack - 2024 and was composed by Akira Yamaoka.
In-game, it is heard at least twice. After James has solved the jukebox puzzle in Neely's Bar, for which
he must glue together a broken vinyl (titled The Long Way Home - Produced by A. Conroy) and will trigger
a flashback of Mary at Rosewater Park. And as he enters Room 307 in Blue Creek Aparments and finds a caged
radio hanging from the ceiling. It also was used for the 2022 teaser trailer music.
This track consists of old and new elements. While the second segment is exclusive to this version, it
will hint at Theme Of Laura with the hammered dulcimer. The segment first is a re-imagination of the piano
solo theme Magdalene from the 2001 original. Which in turn saw a new version in Magdalene's Elusive Lament
on the remake. Another 2024 track, Tears Of Magdalene, is thematically unrelated.
As the mando joins during the second one, it will retain it's fast tempo in a pattern of alternate strumming
(and at the very end, picking). Meaning that every downstroke is followed by an upstroke and vice versa.
Every bar consists of eight groups or doubles of such notes. At times it will release a previously bent
note at the beginning of the next bar, other times it will just move onto the next chord shape. When we
bend, it always will be the final four notes of a bar and always a semitone up.
I first thought there might be two or three mandos playing and that one of them would be playing either
behind the bridge or nut... Or even using those spaces to bend notes. After isolating the frequencies,
I found it to be just one mando playing. I previously explained how Akira used a sample for the mando
in previous games. This track however makes me doubt that and suspect that he did record a physical,
rather than a virtual instrument this time around. The rest of the track consists of strings and
