Personally I think D/F# sounds better than D.

On the 2nd segment of the bridge where they do the walk up and walk down, the Am7 chord is actually played as a Am7sus4 (pretty sure that's how its technically described, but not 100%). Its really much simpler than it sounds. Just keep your finger placement on the b and e string the same throughout as you walk up and down. Here's the chord structure playing this in G form with a capo:
