King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Float Along - Fill Your Lungs
from their 2013 album Float Along - Fill Your Lungs
This song is in 5/4, which is a fairly weird time signature to get the hang of,
but just count 1-2-3-1-2 to get the rhythm down.
Intro:
Synth bass thing:
e|----------|
B|----------|
G|----------|
D|----------|
A|---5~~~~~-|
E|-3--------|
Then lead guitar:
e|-5h7p5---5----------------------------------------|
B|-------8---7-8-5-7---5---------------5------------|
G|-------------------7---7-6-7-6-4---7---7----------|
D|---------------------------------7-----7----------|
A|---------------------------------------5----------|
E|--------------------------------------------------|
Then hit this chord and slightly arpeggiate it:
e|-0---------|
B|-3---------|
G|-2---------|
D|-0---------|
A|-----------|
E|-----------|
Then this sliding riff. You lightly hit the open D string and use it as a droning note:
e|-------------------|
B|-------5--------7--|
G|---2-4------2/4----| x4
D|-0--------0--------|
A|-------------------|
E|-------------------|
Into this:
e|-3h5-3-2--5h7-5-0--|
B|-------------------|
G|-------------------| x4
D|-------------------|
A|-------------------|
E|-------------------|
Back to this:
e|-------------------|
B|-------5--------7--|
G|---2-4------2/4----| x4
D|-0--------0--------|
A|-------------------|
E|-------------------|
And then the awesome explosion:
e|-0---------------------------------------------------|
B|-3--3------------------------------------------------|
G|-2----2----------------------------------------------|
D|-0------0-----------------0--2/4-4/2p0---------------|
A|------------0-2-3---2---0--------------0-2-3---2---0-|
E|-----------------------------------------------------|
e|----10-10-10-9-7/9-----------------2-2-2-3-0-2--------------|
B|------------------------------------------------------------|
G|-------------------7---------------------------2------------|
D|-0------------------------------0---------------------------|
A|----------------------3---2---0-------------------3---2---0-|
E|------------------------------------------------------------|
A high synth plays this throughout:
e|----------|
B|-20p19----|
G|-------19-| x26
D|----------|
A|----------|
E|----------|
And there's this little synth thing at the end. This plays at various point in the
song (usually at the end of chord progressions), but I won't tab it out every single
time, otherwise it will clutter and overcomplicate the tab:
e|-3--2--0--------------|
B|----------3--0--------|
G|----------------2-----|
D|----------------------|
A|----------------------|
E|----------------------|
Verse:
"I saw you in the carpet shades,
Then I felt you like a baby's face"
It's a bit hard to hear exactly what the guitar is playing here,
but I think it's something like this:
e|---------0-------------------|
B|-----3-----3-------5---------|
G|---2---2-----2-------5-----5-| x4
D|-0---------------5-------5---|
A|---------------3-------2-----|
E|-----------------------------|
Basically, just arpeggiate these chords:
e|-0------------|
B|-3-----5---5--|
G|-2-----5---5--|
D|-0-----5---5--|
A|-------3---2--|
E|--------------|
Chorus:
"Just float along and fill your lungs"
e|---------0---------------------------0-----------------|
B|-----3-----3-------5-------------3-----3---------------|
G|---2---2-----2-------5-----5---2---2-------------------|
D|-0---------------5-------5---0-------------------------|
A|---------------3-------2-----------------0-2-3---2---0-|
E|-------------------------------------------------------|
"Float along and breathe a deep breath"
e|---------0-------------------|
B|-----3-----3-------5---------|
G|---2---2-----2-------5-----5-| x2
D|-0---------------5-------5---|
A|---------------3-------2-----|
E|-----------------------------|
Back to the riff section:
e|-------------------|
B|-------5--------7--|
G|---2-4------2/4----| x4
D|-0--------0--------|
A|-------------------|
E|-------------------|
Then:
e|-3h5-3-2--5h7-5-0--|
B|-------------------|
G|-------------------| x4
D|-------------------|
A|-------------------|
E|-------------------|
Second awesome explosion:
e|-0-------------------------------------------------|
B|-3--3----3-----------------------------------------|
G|-2--2--2-2-----------------------------------------|
D|-0-----0-----------------0---2/4--4-2-0------------|
A|-----------0-2-3---2--0------------------3---2---0-|
E|---------------------------------------------------|
e|----14-14-14-12-10-------------------10-9-7-----------------|
B|--------------------------------------------10--------------|
G|------------------------------------------------7-----------|
D|-0------------------0------------0--------------------------|
A|-----------------------3---2--0--------------------3---2--0-|
E|------------------------------------------------------------|
The high synth is even more pronounced this time:
e|----------|
B|-20p19----|
G|-------19-| x26
D|----------|
A|----------|
E|----------|
Verse:
"I saw you in the paper folds,
Then I saw you in my coffee mug,
Just float along and fill your lungs,
Just float along and breathe a deep breath"
The second time around the guitar copies what the sitar is playing:
e|-------10------10-|
B|---------10-------|
G|------------------| x16
D|------------------|
A|-----12-----------|
E|-10---------10----|
Solo section:
Note the slightly D major chord used this time (rather than the Dsus2 chord from before).
I hope you can play fast, because it's pretty damn difficult to keep up the pace:
e|-2---10-10-10---9-10-10-----7-9-5-5-7---3-5---2--|
B|-3------------------------------------------3----|
G|-2----------------------7-------------7----------|
D|-0------------0-----------0----------------------|
A|-------------------------------------------------|
E|-------------------------------------------------|
e|-2---10-10-10-12-9-10-10-----7--9--9---5-7-2-----|
B|-3--------------------------------------------3--|
G|-2-----------------------7-7---------7-----------|
D|-0-----------------------------------------------|
A|-------------------------------------------------|
E|-------------------------------------------------|
e|-2---14-14-14-12---10-12-----9-10---7-7-9---5-7----|
B|-3----------------------------------------------3--|
G|-2---------------7-------7-7------7-------7--------|
D|-0-------------------------------------------------|
A|---------------------------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------------------------|
e|-2---12-12----9-10------7-9------------------------9-|
B|-3-------------------10-----------------------8-10---|
G|-2-----------------7--------7--7-7--7--7--7----------|
D|-0---------0----------------0--0-0--0--0--0----------|
A|-----------------------------------------------------|
E|-----------------------------------------------------|
e|-------9-|
B|--8-10---|
G|---------| x4
D|-0-------|
A|---------|
E|---------|
e|-------7-------7-----|
B|---7-8-----7-8-------|
G|-----------------7---|
D|-7-------7---------0-|
A|---------------------|
E|---------------------|
e|-15-15-15-14-----12---10-12-9b10r9---7-9-5b6r5-|
B|-----------------------------------------------|
G|-------------7------7--------------7-----------|
D|---------------0-------------------------------|
A|-----------------------------------------------|
E|-----------------------------------------------|
e|-------9-7------7-------------------------------|
B|-------------10-----8-10---7-8---5-7------------|
G|-7-7-7-----7------7------7-----7-----7----7-----|
D|-0-0-0----------------------------------0----0--|
A|------------------------------------------------|
E|------------------------------------------------|
End of solo/pre-verse:
e|--------------|
B|-0h2-3--------|
G|---------2----| x8
D|------------0-|
A|--------------|
E|--------------|
Bridge:
"Just float along and fill your lungs,
Just float along and fill your lungs,
Just float along and breathe a deep breath,
Just float along and fill your lungs"
e|-------------|
B|----3-----3--|
G|------2------| x16
D|-0------0----|
A|-------------|
E|-------------|
Riff section once again:
e|-------------------|
B|-------5--------7--|
G|---2-4------2/4----| x4
D|-0--------0--------|
A|-------------------|
E|-------------------|
Then:
e|-3h5-3-2--5h7-5-0--|
B|-------------------|
G|-------------------| x4
D|-------------------|
A|-------------------|
E|-------------------|
Back to:
e|-------------------|
B|-------5--------7--|
G|---2-4------2/4----| x4
D|-0--------0--------|
A|-------------------|
E|-------------------|
Descending riff:
e|-------------------------------------------------------------|
B|-------------------------------------------------------------|
G|-11-9-7---11\9-7---12-11-9---12\11-9---14-12-11---14\12-11---|
D|------0---0----0---------0----0----0----------0----0-----0---|
A|-------------------------------------------------------------|
E|-------------------------------------------------------------|
Little lead:
e|-7-5---5-------------------------|
B|-----8---7-8-5-7---5-------------|
G|-----------------7---7-6-7-6-4---|
D|-------------------------------7-|
A|---------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------|
Riff section but quieter this time:
e|-------------------|
B|-------5--------7--|
G|---2-4------2/4----| x4
D|-0--------0--------|
A|-------------------|
E|-------------------|
Then:
e|-3h5-3-2--5h7-5-0--|
B|-------------------|
G|-------------------| x4
D|-------------------|
A|-------------------|
E|-------------------|
Descending riff:
e|-------------------------------------------------------------|
B|-------------------------------------------------------------|
G|-11-9-7---11\9-7---12-11-9---12\11-9---14-12-11---14\12-11---|
D|------0---0----0---------0----0----0----------0----0-----0---|
A|-------------------------------------------------------------|
E|-------------------------------------------------------------|
Little lead:
e|-7-5---5-------------------------|
B|-----8---7-8-5-7---5-------------|
G|-----------------7---7-6-7-6-4---|
D|-------------------------------7-|
A|---------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------|
Once more:
e|-------------------|
B|-------5--------7--|
G|---2-4------2/4----| x4
D|-0--------0--------|
A|-------------------|
E|-------------------|
e|-3h5-3-2--5h7-5-0--|
B|-------------------|
G|-------------------| x4
D|-------------------|
A|-------------------|
E|-------------------|
Descending riff:
e|-------------------------------------------------------------|
B|-------------------------------------------------------------|
G|-11-9-7---11\9-7---12-11-9---12\11-9---14-12-11---14\12-11---|
D|------0---0----0---------0----0----0----------0----0-----0---|
A|-------------------------------------------------------------|
E|-------------------------------------------------------------|
Different end to the descending riff:
e|--------------------------------------------------------|
B|--------------------------------------------------------|
G|-16-14-12---16\14-12---17-16-14---17\16-14---19p18-19---|
D|--------0----0-----0----------0----0-----0----0-----0---|
A|--------------------------------------------------------|
E|--------------------------------------------------------|
Then the outro is just the D major chord,
until 6:21, which turns into:
e|-2-----3------|
B|-3-----5---5--|
G|-2-----5---5--| x4
D|-0-----5---5--|
A|-------3---2--|
E|--------------|
And then finish on:
e|-2----------|
B|-3----------|
G|-2----------|
D|-0----------|
A|------------|
E|------------|

Float Along - Fill Your Lungs – King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
How to play
"Float Along - Fill Your L…"

Just a quick note after having messed around with some alternate tunings lately, I strongly suspect that this was recorded in either Open D or maybe DADGAD tuning, because the main chord can be played by strumming the open strings in those open tunings. This also explains how all those crazy lead lines can be played with such ease in the song. Less jumping around the fretboard.
I won't re-tab it, as this is good for people that just want to play it in standard tuning, but if you want to make it easier to play, tune to Open D or DADGAD and transpose the notes to that tuning. :)
