how the heck are you suppost to grab the 3 on E string and the 7s on the 1st and 3rd!?!??!!

a: you either need very long fingers and excellent stretching, or
b: just omit it and use the d string for the bass, noone will notice the difference...

Talflick, it isn't dumb. That is how John plays it.
All the fretted notes on the low E are played with your thumb. There a million videos on youtube of stop this train live, and he plays it with his thumb. This only proves that John has freakishly large hands.
