yeah it sounds better with the Dm, but the D is correct because if you listen closely you'll notice that the chord is "borrowed" (not in the key the song is in) and while this may initially sound "bad" it accomplishes what the songwriter wanted it to accomplish, namely making a good cadence to set up the chorus
