JJ Cale performed it in 2009 at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, California
with Tom Petty and Mike Campbell of the Heartbreakers and said it was Tom’s idea.
JJ told Tom that song wouldn’t work because he couldn’t remember how to play it.
He had not played it since the day he recorded it some 35 years earlier, so he
would have to listen to his record of the song and essentially re-learn it. Tom
promised to show him. So that is the story of how Tom Petty taught JJ Cale
how to play one of JJ Cale’s own songs. To his credit, Tom Petty has referred to
JJ Cale as one of the true, great songwriters and this just shows his reverence
for Cale was sincere.
 
The rhythm guitar part of this song is easy to play. Just two open chords, A and E.
And the A chord only appears in the instrumental bridge sections. It sounds like
the verses are kind of palm-muted and the bridges and outro are strummed more loosely.
Guitar 2 (lead guitar) needs to play a bluesy lick over the chords. I hear the guitar
alternating mostly between the fifth and seventh frets on the A string during the verses.
Then let loose for a solo higher up the neck on the instrumental sections.
