Great Big Sea
Fisherman's Lament
D A G A
I stand in my doorway as the moon rises high
D A G A
Over glorious ocean, reflects the bright sky
D A G A
My heart it is aching, so much I could die
D A G A
I've known only the ocean, since I was a boy
CHORUS:
D A D
And I spent my whole life, out there on the sea
G A
Some government bastard now takes it from me
D A D
It's not just the fish, they've taken my pride
G A D
I feel so ashamed that I just want to hide
D A G A
I fished with my father, so long long ago
D A G A
We were proud of our trade, and in us it did show
D A G A
We held our heads high, there was lots of fish then
D A G A
That was the time, when we were proud men
D A G A
We challenged great storms and sometimes we won
D A G A
Faced death and disaster, we rose with the sun
D A G A
We worked and we toiled, we strained arm and brain
D A G A
We were a proud people, will we ere be again?
CHORUS
D A D
And I spent my whole life, out there on the sea
G A
Some government bastard now takes it from me
D A D
It's not just the fish, they've taken my pride
G A D
I feel so ashamed that I just want to hide
D A G A
My father is gone now, and the fish are gone too.
D A G A
Abused and mis-managed, oh what can we do?
D A G A
I'm too old to change, but what of my sons,
D A G A
How will they know that we weren't the ones?
D A G A
DFO regulations permitted the rape
D A G A
Of our beautiful ocean, from head land to cape
D A G A
They brought in big trollers, they tore up our twine
D A G A
Politians don't care for whats yours or whats mine!
CHORUS
D A D
And I spent my whole life, out there on the sea
G A
Some government bastard now takes it from me
D A D
It's not just the fish, they've taken my pride
G A D
I feel so ashamed that I just want to hide
D A G A
You brave Newfoundlanders, now listen to me
D A G A
Shove the package to hell, go back to the sea
D A G A
If we don't stand our ground, we will fade away
D A G A
And the bones of our fathers will turn into clay
D A D
And I spent my whole life, out there on the sea
G A
Some government bastard now takes it from me
D A D
It's not just the fish, they've taken my pride
G A D
I feel so ashamed that I just want to die
Back to the sea.

The line is "we strained arm and brain", although I always find it hard not to hear "we strained our man-brain".

OK, this line makes no sense unless the singer is referring to Particle Physics, which I seriously doubt: "we strained our men brane". I've listened to that line in the song over and over, and the best I can come up with is, "we strained our mad brain". Alternatively, it could be "membrane", but that doesn't make sense either.
Also, there is a chord change to C at the end of the 1st line of the chorus, on the word 'sea'.
