This is missing some verses - I'm providing them below, as well as some historical data on this song and on Frank Zappa; below. Note that the correct title of this song is: "Trouble Every Day". Verse 3 Well, you can cool it; you can heat it; 'Cause baby, I don't need it, take your TV tube 'n eat it, And all that phony stuff on sports, and all those unconfirmed reports, You know I watched that rotten box until my head begin to hurt. From checkin' out the way the newsmen say they get the dirt Before the guys on channel so-and-so ..... and further they assert, That any show they'll interrupt, they'll bring ya news if it comes up, They say that if the place blows up, they will be the first to tell, Cause the boys they got downtown are workin hard and doin swell, And if anybody gets the news before it hits the street, they say that no one blasts it faster; their coverage can't be beat, And if another woman driver gets machine-gunned from her seat, They'll send some joker with a Brownie, and you'll see it all complete Chorus So, I'm watchin & I'm waitin, hopin for the best, Even think I'll go to praying, everytime I hear 'em sayin, That there's no way to delay that trouble comin every day; No way to delay that trouble comin every day. Hey, you know something, people? I'm not black - but there's a whole lotta times I wish I could say I'm not white. Verse 4 Well, I seen the fires burnin and the local people turnin On the merchants and the shops, whose used to sell them brooms & mops, And every other household item - just watch the mob turn and bite 'em Who say it served them right; because a few of them are white, And it's the same across the Nation: Black & White Discrimination Yellin, 'you can't understand me'; and all that other jazz they hand me In the papers and TV, and all that mass stupidity That seems to grow more everyday, each time you hear some nitwit say: He wants to go and do you in, because the color of your skin, just don't appeal to him; No matter if it's black or white, because he's out for blood tonight. Verse 5 You know we got to sit around at home and watch this thing begin, I bet there won't be many here to see it really end. For, the fire in the street ain't like the fire in the heart; And in the eyes of these people, don't you know that this could start In any street - in any town - in any state, if any clown decides that now's the time to fight for some ideal he thinks is right, And if a million more agree, there ain't no great so-ci-ety; As it applies to you and me - OUR COUNTRY ISN'T FREE - And the law refuse to see, if all that you can ever be, is just a lousy janitor; Unless your uncle owns the store. You know that five in every four just won't amount to nothin more, they'll watch the rats go 'cross the floor 'n make up songs 'bout bein poor - Blow your harmonica, son. -------------------------------------------------------------------- This song was in Frank Zappa's first album titled "Freak Out!" Frank was a strident critic of the government; of social injustice; and of hob-snobbery in our society. They are constant themes in all of his music, and he also was a remarkable visionary about where our country was headed. Many of his predictions have come to fruition. Note his statement in the last part of this song: "Our Country Isn't Free". He identified that back in 1965, when this song was written; and he was spot-on. "Trouble Every Day" was a song about his observation of the famous Watts Riots that happened down in L.A. in 1965; he lived in the neighborhood where they occurred. His lyrics reveal an insight into the causation of the riots, at a very deep level that looked deep beneath the surface of the incident. He rightly observes: "The fire in the street ain't like the fire in the heart", and: "the law refuse to see if all that you can be is just a lousy janitor - you know that 5 in every 4 won't amount to nothin more; they'll just watch rats go across the floor .." Therein, he identified the frustration and unfairness that the black community endured at that time; thereby proclaiming that maybe they had reason to strike out. But then he also tied that into the big picture by warning: "... don't you know that this could start in any street, in any town, in any state, if any clown decides that now's the time to fight for some ideal he thinks is right - and if a million more agree, there ain't gonna be no "great society" any more, as it applies to all of us, not just black people. This theme is also evident as he tells us that it's the same across the whole Nation; that is, black & white discrimination. and speaks about people turning against people because "the color of your skin just don't appeal to him - no matter if it's black or white" - he'll just "be out for blood tonight." I think it's a brilliant piece, and so visionary for it's time as well as for his debut album. I was (and still am) a Zappa devotee throughout his entire career, and the stuff he put forth was prophetic, humorou
