I play the first d in the chorus with the e on the fifth fret. It's kind of stretch but that's how it is in the song.

To add on to what ShutUpBlueJay said, you can also mute the top two strings and play the second G as xx0007Then you can run down in D Major as G (high B), Gadd9 (as xx0005), G (xx0003), and then go into the A7 D to mirror the melody.
