Tangled Up in Blue (Take 3, Remake 3)
[Verse 1]
(Riff)
Early one morning the sun was shining
(Riff)
and he was laying in bed
(Riff)
Wondering if she'd changed at all
E Emaj9 A/C#
If her hair was still red
(Riff)
Her folks they said their lives together
(Riff)
Sure was going to be rough
(Riff)
They never did like Mama's homemade dress
E Emaj9 A/C#
Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough
F#m7 C#m
And he was standing on the side of the road
E Emaj9 A/C#
Rain falling on his shoes
F#m7 C#m
Heading out for the old East Coast
E Emaj9 A/C#
Lord knows he's paid some dues
F#m7
Getting through
G#m7 F#m7 E A/C# E A/C#
Tangled up in blue
[Verse 2]
(Riff)
She was married when they first met
(Riff)
Soon to be divorced
(Riff)
He helped her out of a jam, I guess
E Emaj9 A/C#
But he used a little too much force
(Riff)
And he drove that car as far as they could
(Riff)
Abandoned it out West
(Riff)
And split up on a dark sad night
E Emaj9 A/C#
Both agreeing it was best
F#m7 C#m
And she turned around to look at him
E Emaj9 A/C#
As he was walking away
F#m7 C#m
And she said "This can't be the end
E Emaj9 A/C#
we'll meet on another day
F#m7
On the avenue"
G#m7 F#m7 E A/C# E A/C#
Tangled up in blue
[Verse 3]
(Riff)
He had a job in the great north woods
(Riff)
Working as a cook for a spell
(Riff)
But he never liked it all that much
E Emaj9 A/C#
And one day the ax just fell
(Riff)
So he drifted down to L.A.
(Riff)
Where he reckoned to try his luck
(Riff)
Working for a while in an airplane plant
E Emaj9 A/C#
Loading cargo onto a truck
F#m7 C#m
But all the while he was alone
E Emaj9 A/C#
The past was close behind
F#m7 C#m
He'd seen a lot of women
E Emaj9 A/C#
But she never escaped his mind
F#m7
And he just grew
G#m7 F#m7 E A/C# E A/C#
Tangled up in blue
[Verse 4]
(Riff)
She was working in a topless place
(Riff)
And I stopped in for a beer
(Riff)
I just kept looking at the side of her face
E Emaj9 A/C#
In the spotlight, so clear
(Riff)
And later on, when the crowd thinned out
(Riff)
I was about to do the same
(Riff)
She was standing there, in back of my chair
E Emaj9 A/C#
Said "tell me what's your name?"
F#m7 C#m
I muttered something underneath my breath
E Emaj9 A/C#
She studied the lines of my face
F#m7 C#m
I must admit, I felt a little uneasy
E Emaj9 A/C#
When she bent down to tie the laces
F#m7
Of my shoes
G#m7 F#m7 E A/C# E A/C#
Tangled up in blue
[Verse 5]
(Riff)
She lit a burner on the stove
(Riff)
And offered me a pipe
(Riff)
"I thought you'd never say hello" she said
E Emaj9 A/C#
"You look like the silent type"
(Riff)
And she opened up a book of poems
(Riff)
And handed it to me
(Riff)
Written by an Italian poet
E Emaj9 A/C#
From the thirteenth century
F#m7 C#m
And every one of them words rang true
E Emaj9 A/C#
And glowed like burning coal
F#m7 C#m
Pouring off of every page
E Emaj9 A/C#
Like it was written in my soul
F#m7
From me to you
G#m7 F#m7 E A/C# E A/C#
Tangled up in blue
[Verse 6]
(Riff)
He was always in a hurry
(Riff)
Too busy or too stoned
(Riff)
And everything that she ever planned
E Emaj9 A/C#
Just had to be postponed
(Riff)
He thought they were successful
(Riff)
She thought they were blessed
(Riff)
With objects and material things
E Emaj9 A/C#
But I never was impressed
F#m7 C#m
And when it all came crashing down
E Emaj9 A/C#
I became withdrawn
F#m7 C#m
The only thing I knew how to do
E Emaj9 A/C#
Was keep on keeping on
F#m7
Like a bird that flew
G#m7 F#m7 E A/C# E A/C#
Tangled up in blue
[Verse 7]
(Riff)
So now I'm going back again
(Riff)
Got to get to her somehow
(Riff)
All the people we used to know
E Emaj9 A/C#
They're an illusion to me now
(Riff)
Some are mathematicians
(Riff)
Some are doctor's wives
(Riff)
Don't know how it all got started
E Emaj9 A/C#
Don't know what they're doing with their lives
F#m7 C#m
But me, I'm still on the road
E Emaj9 A/C#
Heading for another joint
F#m7 C#m
We always did feel the same
E Emaj9 A/C#
We just saw it from a different point
F#m7
Of view

Thanks PkPack14, I really appreciate the fact that you wrote this out in Open E.
I only needed this tab for the lyrics, as I start getting lost at Verse 05, but as I play it in Open E, it just makes it so much easier to follow when the Tab is at least following the chords I play.
I much prefer to play Bob's songs in the tuning that Bob recorded it in, as it just makes it easier to get the tone of the song sounding a bit more like the recordings I love.
Thanks again.

do you play this in open d? none of the tabs sound right in open tuning and i can't tell if i'm doing something wrong

Thank you, good guide for this early version! Interesting, the decision to use the key of A (for Dylan to slap on the capo) was made very late in the process; all versions are in E, only the Minneapolis band version used for the album is in A.
