sounds awfully western folk. it's great. pick 1st and 5ths in the bass. strum the
chords in treble. pick or pop the bass with your thumb and  alternatingly and
quickly strum the chord downstroke then upstroke with your fingers. chords the
chords are Am, C, Am, G

Well now that you mention an alternate picking style. I suggest this: e| B| 1 1 G| 2 2 D| 2 2 A|0--0-0 0--0-0 E| (pm)............(x3) Then play that without palm mutes throughout the Am-C-Am-G progression of the song. I also think between the first Am-C there is an Em, so its Am-Em-C...it sounds correct when you play it against the A 0-2-3--3-3-2-0 E------3-------- riff.

e| B| 1 1 1 1 G| 2 2 2 2 D| 2 2 2 2 A|0--0-0 0--0-0 E| repeat THAT 3 times in palm mutes. Then do the same without palm mutes with the Am-Em-C-Am-G progression.
